RUBE GOLDBERG
Rube Goldberg sends a typed letter of thanks for the water
color.
Typed Letter Signed: "Rube Goldberg", 1p, 8½x6¾ The McNaught
Syndicate, Inc. letterhead. New York City, New York 1922 October 22. To
Mr. Temple. In full: "Thanks very much for the water color
sketch. It is a unique piece of work and I shall always value
it very highly. I appreciate your words of praise. Little messages of the kind
you sent help men in my line of work to feel that their efforts are worth while.
Thanks again. Very sincerely yours," Reuben Lucius Goldberg (1883-1970), an
engineer turned cartoonist, created the popular Professor Lucifer Butts, famous
for his inventions of mechanical contrivances of absurdly unnecessary complexity
as well as a comic strip featuring Boob McNutt, a young man whose interest in
other people often got him into trouble (syndicated by Hearst from 1918-1933).
He was awarded the 1948 Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning for a work
entitled "Peace Today". Fold creases through signature. Mounting remnants on
verso light show through. Overall, fine condition.
