Dee had indeed been nominated for an Emmy - for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Special for Roots: The Next Generations. Although Esther Rolle won the Emmy that year, Dee was awarded one in 1990 for Decoration Day on The Hallmark Hall of Fame. RUBY DEE (1922-2014) a multitalented veteran of stage, screen and television who made her Broadway debut in 1946 , married fellow performer OSSIE DAVIS, mentioned in this letter, in 1948, two years after they met during a Broadway production. Over the years, they have appeared together on Broadway (A Raisin in the Sun), screen (debuting in No Way Out in 1950) and television (from Roots: The Next Generations to the PBS series With Ossie & Ruby). The couple has also been active in social causes, including Black voting rights and the fight against sickle cell anemia. Dee has appeared in a number of feature films, including Spike Lee's Do The Right Thing (1989) and Jungle Fever (1991), and also appeared on TV's The Guiding Light. Also an accomplished writer, she co-authored the script for the 1967 film, Up Tight!, wrote the 1975 TV play, Twin-Bit Gardens, and published Glowchild, a book of poetry, in 1972.
