RUDOLF NUREYEV
Black and white publicity photograph of Rudolf Nureyev in the title
role of Petrushka in a 1975 Paris Opera production.
Photograph signed: "Rudolf/Nureyev". B/w, 7x7¾. Depicted in
the title role of Petrushka in a 1975 Paris Opera production.
Russian-born ballet dancer Rudolf Nureyev (1938-1993) first performed this role
during the 1963-1964 season of the Royal Ballet in London. The former Kirov male
lead had made a dramatic defection in June 1961 at a Paris airport,
rushing to local policemen, begging for protection. After his "leap to freedom",
Nureyev, who was known for his time- and grativy-defying leaps and also executed
to perfection his pas de deux and pas de quatre, became a guest artist of the
Royal Ballet, London. He became famed as a leading classical and modern
dancer and was often partnered with Dame Margot Fonteyn (the two's
performances in Romeo and Julietand Swan Lake were
captured for posterity on film in 1966 and 1967 respectively). Nureyev, who also
performed in a number of other films, including Sleeping Beauty
(1970) and Don Quixote (1973), garnered rave reviews for the
documentary, I Am a Dancer (1973), and also appeared in dramatic
roles, including Valentino (1973) and Exposed (1983). He was also
a noted choreographer and served as director of the Paris Opera
Ballet from 1983-1989. Fine condition. Framed in the Gallery of History
style: 14½x22.
