VALENTINO BUYS A CAR!

RUDOLPH VALENTINO.
Check filled out and signed: "R. Valentino", 6x2¾. Los Angeles, California, 1921 July 22. Check no. 100053, drawn on the Hollywood Branch of Citizens Trust and Savings Bank, payable to Dunn Motor Car Co. for $250.00. Rudolph Valentino (1895-1926) was the great romantic screen idol of the 1920s, the epitome of the "Latin lover." The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse had opened on March 5, 1921, followed by Uncharted Seas on April 21, 1921, and The Conquering Power on July 8, 1921. Exactly two weeks later, he bought this car. Camille opened on September 11, 1921 and The Sheik opened on October 30, 1921. He was a very busy actor in 1921. Valentino was a connoisseur of luxury automobiles. Walter E. Dunn personally and secretively began design and development of an automobile referred to as the Dunn Cycle Car around 1914. He built his own two-speed with reverse transmission that weighed a mere 25 lbs. The car appeared as a lightly built two-passenger runabout design. Its cost was about $250 but it was not a luxury car. It is possible Valentino bought this car for someone else. His sudden death five years later at the age of 31 due to a perforated ulcer brought on a wave of mass hysteria among female fans. Stamped name of payee (Dunn Motor) is very faint, but its stamped endorsement on verso is clear. Lightly soiled. Normal bank stamps on verso. Tiny cancellation holes touch parts of signature which remains fully legible. Otherwise, fine condition.
