RUDOLPH VALENTINO
Rare b/w 11x14 photograph, signed with Valentino's birth name "Rodolfo", of the actor in one of his last roles in The Eagle
Photograph signed "Sempre tuo/Rodolpho". 15½x19½ overall, 11x14 image, one surface. This rare photograph is extraordinary for several reasons. First, and probably most importantly, it's signed with Valentino's birth name - "Rodolfo" - instead of his stage name of Rudolph. Valentino typically signed his name "Rudolph" when signing autographs, making this an exceptionally rare piece. Secondly, it's of Valentino in one of his last roles, as Lt. Vladimir Dubrovsky in The Eagle (1925). He would make only two films after this - including a sequel to The Sheik, the movie that made him a star, called Son of the Sheik - before his death from a perforated ulcer and blood poisoning in 1926. Valentino (1895-1926, born Rodolfo Alfonzo Raffaelo Pierre Filibert Guglielmi di Valentina d'Antonguolla in Castellaneta, Puglia, Taranto, Italy) was the great romantic screen idol of the 1920s, the epitome of the "Latin lover". Among his films, all silent, were The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (1921), The Sheik (1921), Monsieur Beaucaire (1924) and The Son of the Sheik (1926). Valentino's sudden death from a perforated ulcer on August 23, 1926 at the age of 31 brought on a wave of mass hysteria among female fans. As with Elvis Presley half a century later, rumors persisted for years that he was not dead, but in hiding. Lightly toned and stained. Small stain touching signature. Signature is faint but legible. Small tears in top, bottom and right edges. Small creases in all corners. Otherwise in fine condition.
