RUDY VALLÉE and JANE GREERThe singer signs a check to the actress for $100.00 on April 15, 1946 Check signed: "Rudy Vallée", 7x3. Hollywood, California, 1946 April 15. Check No. 2469, drawn on the account of the Rudy Vallee Drene Show at California Bank, Hollywood-Vine office, payable to Jane Greer for $100. Endorsed on verso: "Jane Greer/ Bettejane Greer". Vallée and Greer, who met while performing on radio, were married from December 2, 1943-July 27, 1944. Their marriage broke up under pressure from Howard Hughes, who had contracted Greer for film work and was outraged when she left Hollywood to marry the crooner. One of the most popular entertainers of the 1930s, RUDY VALLÉE (1901-1986) was one of the few vocalists to begin crooning before Bing Crosby. Famed for singing through a megaphone and introducing his performances with a salutary "Heigh-Ho, Everybody", Vallée recorded into the mid-1940s. Singer and actress JANE GREER (1924-2001), born Bettejane Greer, began her career singing with big bands and on the radio. Greer was brought to Hollywood by Howard Hughes, who spotted her in a 1942 issue of Life magazine. Kept a virtual prisoner by Hughes, Greer fled Hollywood and married crooner Rudy Vallee, whom she had met while performing on radio. The marriage was short-lived (December 2, 1943-July 27, 1944) and Greer returned to Hughes and her contract. She made her film debut in 1945's Pan-Americana and would go on to appear in numerous feature films, including Sinbad the Sailor (1947), You're in the Navy Now (1951), The Prisoner of Zenda (1952), and Man of a Thousand Faces (1957). Greer, who debuted on television in The Revlon Mirror Theater (1953), appeared in several made-for-TV movies and made guest appearances on shows through 1990. Greer hadrecurring rolesonFalcon Crest (as Charlotte Pershing, 1984-1985) and Twin Peaks (as Vivian Smythe, 1990). Her second husband (1947-1963) was producer Edward Lasker, with whom she had three children. In 1960, she was awarded a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. This check contains a rare form of Greer's stage and birth names. Bank cancellation holes nick the "Rud" in Rudy. Bank stamps on front and verso, not at signatures. Minor show through of endorsement at left portion of front. Otherwise, fine condition.
