Filled out in Vallée's hand, endorsed on verso "Walter Scharf" and by a second, unidentified, endorser. From the mid-1920s to mid-1950s, RUDY VALLÉE (1901-1986) enjoyed a successful career on radio (where he hosted a popular variety show from 1929), in movies, in Broadway musicals and with a solo nightclub act. The first singer to be called a "crooner", he was known for carrying a small megaphone. He made a fine comeback in the Broadway hit How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying (1961). Pianist, music director and composer WALTER SCHARF (1910-2003) pianist for singer Helen Morgan before becoming an arranger and accompanist for Rudy Vallée. In 1933, he began a long career as an orchestrator and music director for Hollywood films. Although he never won an Oscar, he was nominated for 10, including Best Score (for Brazil, 1944), Best Adapted Score (Funny Girl, 1968) and Best Song ("Ben," sung by Michael Jackson in the film of the same name, 1972). The son of Yiddish theatre comic Bessie Zwerling, Scharf also composed orchestral pieces on Jewish themes, beginning with Palestine Suite (1945).
