RUDY VALLÉE and BUNNY BERIGAN
Vallée signs, Berigan endorses, a 1932 check for $45.00
Check signed: "Rudy Vallée", 8x3. New York, N.Y., 1932 September 9. Check no. 7884, drawn on Vallée's account at the Manufacturers Trust Company, payable to Bunny Berigan for $45.00. Filled out by Vallée, and endorsed on verso by Bunny Berigan" and a second, unidentified endorser ("Gertrude E. ?). From the mid-1920s to mid-1950s, RUDY VALLÉE (1901-1986) enjoyed a successful career on radio (where he hosted a popular variety show from 1929), in movies, in Broadway musicals and with a solo nightclub act. The first singer to be called a "crooner", he was known for carrying a small megaphone. He made a fine comeback in the Broadway hit How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying (1961). BUNNY BERIGAN (1908-1942) was a swing era trumpet player who performed with Paul Whiteman, Tommy Dorsey, Glenn Miller and Benny Goodman. His 1937 recording of "I Can't Get Started," now a popular standard but then a little known song, became his biggest hit and signature number. It may be heard on the movie sound tracks of Save the Tiger and Chinatown. He formed his own band in 1937, but the strain of managing the financial end of the band business proved overwhelming. Ordered by his doctors to give up drinking and trumpet playing, Berigan couldn't do either, and died of a massive cerebral hemorrhage. Bank cancellation hole touches "R" of Rudy. Fold creases not near signature. Bank cancellation stamp on verso touching all of endorsement.
