Rudy Vallée signs a contract to employ MCA Artists Ltd for a period of three years.
Contract signed: "Hubert Prior Vallée (Rudy Vallée)" as Artist on last page, 4p, 8½x11, conjoined leaves. New York, New York, 1949 November 21. "Standard AFRA Exclusive Artists' Manager Contract Under Rule 12-A" by which Vallée employs MCA Artists Ltd. "as his sole and exclusive Agent in the broadcasting industry within the scope of the regulations of the American Federation of Radio Artists" for a period of three years, commencing on the date of the contract. He agrees to pay a commission equal to ten per cent "of all moneys or other consideration received..." Vallée has also initialed: "R.V." on a rider stapled to the lower portion of last page. Also signed by an Agent for MCA Artists, Ltd., who has also initialed next to Vallée's initials on the rider. Lightly creased with fold, not at signatures. Staple holes at upper left blank corner, ¾-inch tear at upper blank portion from staple being removed. 2 file holes at upper blank margins. Overall, fine condition. Accompanied by mimeographed TLS: "G.L. Hall" in ink for the American Federation of Radio Artists, 1p, 8½x11. New York, New York, 1949 November 30. On letterhead of American Federation of Radio Artists to MCA Artists, Ltd. Agency. Begins: "Gentlemen". In full: "This will acknowledge receipt, for filing purposes only, of a copy of contract between your offices and the following artists: Artist/HUBERT PRIOR VALLEE (pka RUDY VALLEE) Date of Contract NOVEMBER 21 1949". Lightly creased with folds, not at signature. Staple holes at upper left corner and lower blank margin, 2 file holes at upper blank margin. Fine condition. With two typed documents, dated November 29, 1949 and December 1, 1949 (signed by G.L. Hall), relating to this contract. Also includes nine documents from April-May 1950 relating to Vallée and his association with MCA Artists Ltd. and five documents from February 1951, the year Vallée renewed his contract with the agency. All related documents are lightly creased and have staple holes at upper left corners and file holes at upper margins. Six sheets have minor paper loss at upper blank edges. Overall, fine and interesting. In the year he signed this contract, Vallee appeared in four feature films: Father Was a Fullback, Beautiful Blonde from Bashful Bend, Mother is a Freshman and My Dear Secretary. He also made four appearances on the TV variety show, Toast of the Town. From the mid-1920s to the mid-1950s, Rudy Vallée (1901-1986), born Hubert Prior Vallée, enjoyed a successful career on radio, in movies, in Broadway musicals and with a solo nightclub act. His films include The Palm Beach Story (1942), I Remember Mama (1948), The Helen Morgan Story (1957), The Night They Raided Minsky's (1968), Won Ton Ton, the Dog Who Saved Hollywood (1976) and How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying (1967), in which he reprised his role from the successful 1961 Broadway musical. The first singer to be called a "crooner", Vallée was known for carrying a small megaphone and for his catch phrase "Heigh-Ho, Everyone", which he first used when appearing at New York's Heigh-Ho Club.
