RUDY VALLÉE and IRVING MANSFIELD
His ink signature on a carbon document authorizing him to perform comedy
spots on his TV variety show, also signed by producer Mansfield
Carbon Document signed in ink: "Rudy Vallée, 1 page, 8½x11. New
York, N.Y., 1965 January 11. Vallée signs his acceptance of a prior
understanding with the On Broadway Tonight Company that he will include a 5-6
minute comedy spot, consisting of material supplied by himk, into every 6 or 7
episodes of the CBS TV program On Broadway Tonight. Also signed
"Irving Mansfield" on behalf of the production company. From the
mid-1920s to mid-1950s, RUDY VALLÉE (1901-1986) enjoyed a successful
career on radio (where he hosted a popular variety show from 1929), in
movies, in Broadway musicals and with a solo nightclub act. The first singer to
be called a "crooner", he was known for carrying a small megaphone. He
made a fine comeback in the Broadway hit How To Succeed In Business Without
Really Trying (1961). Vallée hosted On Broadway Tonight, a TV
variety show (1964-1965) and featuring weekly guests, some already well-known
(such as Judy Garland), others new to most viewers (as with Richard Pryor). TV
producer and publicist IRVING MANSFIELD (1908-1988) was married for 35
years to author Jacqueline Susann, and spent much of his career publicizing her
novels and producing the film versions. The marriage worked despite Susann's
many infidelities; Mansfield was adept at generating good publicity for her and
her books. Susann died in 1974; Irving co-authored a memoir, Life with
Jackie, in 1983. Mansfield didn't rely entirely on his wife for his success.
He produced several other TV shows for CBS beginning in the late 1940s,
including Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts, and the Morey Amsterdam and
Frank Sinatra shows. Fold creases not near signature. Fine
condition.
