RUDY VALLÉE
Rudy Vallée writes a letter discussing the types of drugs that he
likes.
Typed letter signed: "Rudy and Eleanor/Vallée", 1p, 7¼x10½. No
place, 1967 November 19. On his personal letter head to Miss
Gallagher. Begins: "My Dear Miss Gallagher" In full: "
I don't use many drugs, even tho I was brought up in a drug store in which I
worked for my father from the age of ten to sixteen! Very simply, the ones that
I do occasionally use are: ANACIN/CHLOR TRIMETON MALEATE) REP TABS/SECONAL
CAPSULES/DEXEDRINE SHORT AND LONG TWELVE HOUR SPAN. I have found ever since I
first began trying to relieve an (sic) headache, that NOTHING, but
NOTHING succeeds with ME, like ANACIN!! But in 1952, after an operation of the
vocal cords, I came out of the anathestic (sic) with a pain in the right
temple! No one could give me the answer for this phenomenon and it persisted for
almost THREE WEEKS! But blessed ANACIN gave me relief for almost SEVEN hours!!!
I suppose a narcotic would have been equally effective but here was relief with
no danger of addiction or side effects! The pain was later diagnosed as a
PRESSED PINCHED (hand written above) NERVE due to the
head being bent during the entire operation...but ANACIN defeated the pain! When
I have been indulging in derivitives (sic) of MILK such as CHEESE, I take
a REP TAB (repeating tablet) of CHLOR TRIMETON 8 mg. and not only do I awaken
without much or any mucous or catarrhal condition, but if it is my intention to
sleep late, the REP TAB CHLOR TRIMETON not only relaxes me AS I PREPARE TO
SLEEP, BUT IT RELAXES ME ALL THRU THE NIGHT AND MORNING so that I sleep late
into the afternoon!! When we drove across the country and all over the United
States doing many night clubs and hotel engagements in my one man show, Mrs.
Vallee and I would have a few rum drinks after dinner, usually about nine
o'clock, and just before eating, we'd take a SECONAL CAPSULE (the small
ones....two, if one doesn't have any effect!) and then sleep with five hundred
miles in prospect the next day! I did ALL the driving and when seven o'clock
came all too soon, a twelve hour span DEXEDRINE woke me up and kept me alert
until maybe late afternoon when a short span capsule would keep me keenly awake
until we arrived at the night's stop. That's our story on drugs!" From the
mid-1920s to mid-1950s, Rudy Vallée (1901-1986) enjoyed a successful career
on radio (where he hosted a popular variety show from 1929), in movies,
in Broadway musicals and with a solo nightclub act. The first singer to be
called a "crooner", he was known for carrying a small megaphone. He made
a fine comeback in the Broadway hit How To Succeed In Business Without Really
Trying (1961). Lightly creased at corners. Fold creases not near
signature. Fine condition.
