RUMER GODDEN
The British author types letter to an acquaintance, thanking her for
the book and flowers, signs name in blue ink
Typed letter signed: "Rumer Godden" in blue ink. 1 page,
8½x11. Written care of Mrs. Harvey Pike of New York City, New York. November 17,
1958. Addressed to Miss Constance Spencer of San Francisco, California. In
full: "The violets were really heavenly, and I almost did not keep my
engagements that day, so fascinating was the book. My grateful thanks. It was
such a pleasure to meet you. Yours sincerely". Rumer Godden
(1907-1998) was a British author of more than sixty fiction and nonfiction
books. Godden grew up in Bangladesh, which was then part of colonial India,
eventually becoming a dance instructor in Calcutta, a position she held for
twenty years, and during which time she published her best-selling novel
Black Narcissus (1939). Her later novels included An
Episode of Sparrows (1956), The Greengae Summer (1958),
and In This House of Brede (1969), and nonfiction such as
Hans Christian Anderson (1955), The Butterfly Lions
(1977), and A Time to Dance, No Time to Weep (1987). She
furthermore wrote dozens of children's books including The Doll House
(1947), The Story of Holly and Ivy (1958), and The
Diddakoi (1972). Most of her novels related to life in India, creating
an atmosphere that evoked all the senses and which documented Indian life.
