Price: $220.00
RUPERT HUGHES. Autograph Letter signed: "Rupert", 1p,
7¾x9½. Los Angeles, California, 1949 August 26. On personal letterhead to
journalist Louis Sobol, c/o "The American", New York. In full: "I
called up your hotel here, only to learn that you had 'checked out,' which is
better than being chucked out, but equally bad news for me. I wanted to thank
you for your typically gracious and generous words about my speech at the Milton
Berle dinner, published in this morning's Examiner. You have a big warm
heart and a beg warm vocabulary, and everybody loves you. I expect to be in New
York in October and shall hope to see you then. With every good wish and much
gratitude, I am Yours forever". Rupert Hughes (1872-1956), the uncle and
mentor of Howard Hughes, was an author, screenwriter and composer who wrote more
than 50 books. One of his most controversial works was a three-volume
biography depicting the human side of George Washington. Ink notation (unknown
hand) in lower margin. Date stamp in upper margin. Lightly creased. Otherwise,
fine condition.
