RUSS MEYERHe signs an album leaf on August 12, 1970. Autograph: "Gratefully/Russ Meyer/Aug 12, 1970", 6¾x9¼ album leaf with 1¾x5½ newspaper article attached at lower right. RussMeyer (1922-2004) was an American actor, director and producer best known for his adult films and exploitation movies, including the cult classic Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! (1965). Meyer started out as a photographer, winning amateur awards before he was 15. He spent World War II as a combat cameraman, and then moved to the somewhat less stressful field of glamour photos after the war. He soon moved into photographing models for skin magazines (he was reportedly one of the most prolific of Hugh Hefner's photographers at Playboy) and then into nudie films. His early films like The Immoral Mr. Teas (1959) slipped by censor boards by showing nudity without sexual contact. He abandoned this strategy and added plenty of violence with Lorna (1964), a mix that culminated in cult classics like Motor Psycho (1965) and Harry, Cherry and Raquel (1969) as well as Pussycat. Meyer achieved mainstream recognition - and courted obscenity charges - with Vixen (1969), a shoestring movie that managed to pull in almost 80 times its production cost. Meyer and 20th Century Fox then rode the coattails of Midnight Cowboy (1969) - the first X-rated film to win an Oscar - to commercial success with Beyond the Valley of the Dolls (1970), co-scripted by Meyer and movie critic Roger Ebert. Jagged at left edge from removal from bound book. Fine condition.
