Both flights were classified Department of Defense missions. The tire was one of the two nose gear tires that provided a safe landing for the crew and their vehicle. This artifact is from the personal collection of Robert 'Hoot' Gibson [facsimile signature] Created exclusively by the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation". Gibson was the commander of STS-27, one of five shuttle missions he flew. Russell "Rusty" Schweickart (born1935) became an astronaut in 1963. Schweickart was awarded the NASA Exceptional Service Metal in 1973 and an Emmy Award in 1969 for the transmission of the first live television pictures from outer space. This piece is from the Personal Collection of Mission Lunar Module Pilot Rusty Schweickart. Fine condition.
