RUTH ETTING
Smiling image of "America's Sweetheart of Song"
Photograph signed: "with/good wishes from/Ruth Etting". B/w, 8x10. Ruth Etting
(1896-1978) was a popular American torch singer who recorded over 200 songs between
1926 and 1937. Billed as "America's Sweetheart of Song," she made a smooth transition
from the jazz age ("Love Me or Leave Me)" to the Depression ("Ten Cents a Dance)."
She made her Broadway debut in the Ziegfeld Follies of 1927, and starred opposite Eddie
Canto (Whoopee!, 1929) and Ed Wynn (Simple Simon, 1930). Her film roles included
Roman Scandals (opposite Cantor again, 1932). Her career was badly damaged when her
first husband, mobster Moe Snyder, shot her fiancé, pianist Myrl Alderman. This story
was filmed as Love Me or Leave Me, which won 8 Oscars in 1955, with Doris Day cast as
Etting, James Cagney as Snyder. Etting's rendition of "Button Up Your Overcoat" is heard
on the soundtrack of the 2011 film, Water for Elephants. Printing defect at left edge. Corners
creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
