RUTH PITTER
The British poet who earned the highest honor in the Royal Society of Literature pens her name in blue ink
Signature: "Ruth Pitter" in blue ink. 3x1½. Ruth Pitter (1897-1992) was a British poet and author, being one of the most respected female poets of the 20th century. She published her first book of poetry in 1920, the first in 18 volumes in her 70 year career. Pitter's poems leaned towards more traditional conventions, which made her disliked by critics but easily accessible to readers. Despite this, she was the first woman to receive the Queen's Gold Medal for Poetry (1955), and in 1974 was named a "Companion of Literature", the highest honor given by the Royal Society of Literature. Toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
