Signature: "Rutland Boughton". 3x1½. Boughton(1878-1960) was an English composer of operas (which he called "music drama", after Wagner) and choral music. He was also the principal English advocate of Wagner's theories of music drama. He studied music at the Royal College of Music in 1900 but was largely self-taught. His most well-known opera is the Celtic-themed The Immortal Hour, based on a play by William Sharp. It was first written in 1913 and ran for 216 performances in London in 1922. He's also known for his operas based on the legend of King Arthur, including The Birth of Arthur (1913), The Round Table (1916), The Lily Maid (1934) and Avalon and Galahad (1945), as well as Alketsis (1922), based on the play by Euripides, and The Queen of Cornwall (1924), based on Thomas Hardy's play.
