STEPHEN C. LYFORD. Manuscript DS: "S.C. Lyford," 1p, 7¾x9¾. Office Senior Ordnance Office, Yazoo River, Miss., 1863 May 30. Lieutenant & Senior Ordnance Officer Lyford writes to 1st Lieutenant C.C. Chaffee, Corps of Ordnance, U.S. Army. In full: "By direction of Maj. Gen. Grant you will report without delay for temporary duty in the Engineer Department during the siege of Vicksburg to Lt Col John A. Rawlins Assistant Adjnt General Department of the Tennessee at Head Quarters of the Department in the fields." Lyford had been brevetted 2nd Lieutenant in the 1st Dragoons on June 24, 1861. He was transferred to ordnance on October 24, 1861, and became 1st Lieutenant on March 3, 1863. On July 4, 1863, Lyford was brevetted Captain for gallant and meritorious service during the siege of Vicksburg, later receiving the brevets of Major and Lieutenant Colonel. On July 4, 1863, the Confederates formally surrendered Vicksburg, Mississippi, to General Grant. Partially split in blank areas, else in fine condition.
