S. DAVID GRIGGS and HANK HARTSFIELD
Both sign an envelope commemorating a training flight for a Space Shuttle mission.
Commemorative Envelope signed: "D. David Griggs", "Hank Hartsfield", 6½x3½. Ink stamp cachet celebrates a space shuttle training mission aboard a Grumman Gulfstream II aircraft modified to simulate the space shuttle, postmarked White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico, November 22, 1977, 13-cent US flag stamp affixed. S. DAVID GRIGGS (1939-1989), the instructor on this trainingmission, was mission specialist for Discovery STS 51-D, which flew April 12-19, 1985. During the flight, Griggs conducted the first unscheduled space walk of the space program. He was in training as pilot of Discovery STS-33 when he died in the crash of a vintage WWII airplane. Henry "Hank" HARTSFIELD (1933-2014) was a US Air Force fighter and test pilot before joining the astronaut corps in 1969. A member of the support crew for Apollo 16 and three Skylab missions, he was also part of the orbital flight test mission team, as shown here. He later went into space three times on the Space Shuttle, once as pilot (STS4, 1982) and twice as spacecraft commander (STS41-D, 1984; STS61-A, 1985). After retiring as an astronaut, he continued his work for NASA, most recently on the International Space Station program. Fine condition.
