S. DAVID GRIGGS, ROBERT OVERMYER and VANCE BRAND The three space explorers sign this envelope honoring the Grumman Gulfstream II Shuttle Training Aircraft (STA) Commemorative Envelope signed: "S.D. Griggs", "Bob Overmyer" and "V. Brand" 6½x3½. Printed cachet honors "Grumman Gulfstream II/Shuttle Training Aircraft (STA)". 13¢ Independence Hall stamp affixed. Postmarked White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico, February 2, 1977. S. DAVID GRIGGS (1939-1989) was mission specialist for Discovery STS 51-D, which flew April 12-19, 1985. During the flight, Griggs conducted the first unscheduled space walk of the space program. He was in training as a pilot of Discovery STS-33 when he died in the crash of a vintage WWII airplane. U.S. Marine Corps Colonel ROBERT OVERMYER (1936-1996), who was first chosen for the USAF Manned Orbiting Laboratory Program in 1966, was later selected as a NASA astronaut. His maiden voyage, on the Columbia space shuttle (November 11-16, 1982) with Vance Brand, William Lenoir, and Joseph Allen, was the first time four crew members were sent into space. Overmyer was later part of the seven member international crew of the Challenger space shuttle (April 29-May 6, 1985), which carried the European Spacelab module. He was 59 when he died in the crash of the VK30 prototype plane he was testing. A veteran test pilot, VANCE BRAND (b.1931) was Apollo command module pilot on the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project (1975) and commander of space shuttle missions STS-5 (Columbia, 1982), STS-41B (Challenger, 1984) and STS-35 (Columbia, 1990). He also served as Director of Plans for the National Aerospace Plane for NASA. Fine condition.
