Commemorative envelope signed: "S. David Griggs", "Ed Rainey", 6½x3½. Ink stamp showing the Grumman Gulfstream II Shuttle Training Aircraft (STA), postmarked White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico, November 9, 1976, 13-cent Liberty Bell stamp affixed. Typed caption identifies the two signers as instructors on the second of two practice simulated Orbiter landings. S. S. DAVID GRIGGS (1939-1989) was mission specialist for Discovery STS 51-D, which flew April 12-19, 1985. During the flight, Griggs conducted the first unscheduled space walk of the space program. He was in training as pilot of Discovery STS-33 when he died in the crash of a vintage WWII airplane. ED RAINEY, as noted here, was an instructor in the space shuttle training program.
