All sign an envelope commemorating a training mission for shuttle astronauts.
Commemorative Envelope signed: "S. David Griggs", "Ed Mendenhall", "Harley Weyer", 6½x3 ½. Ink stamp cachet celebrates training flights on a Grumman Gulfstream II aircraft modified to simulate landings of the space shuttle, held at Ellington Air Force Base Houston Texas, postmarked Houston, Texas, September 24, 1976, 13-cent Liberty Tree stamp imprinted on envelope. The three signers co-piloted this mission. GRIGGS (1939-1989) was Mission Specialist on Discovery STS-51D (1985). He was killed on June 17, 1989 in the crash of a vintage WWII airplane. At the time of his death, he was in flight crew training as pilot for Discovery STS-33, a Department of Defense mission, scheduled for launch in August 1989. WEYER was the Flight Engineer on this shuttle training flight MENDENHALL the fellow instructor. Fine condition.
