Both sign a philatelic envelope marking the test flight of the Grumman
Gulfstream II Shuttle Training Aircraft (STA).
Commemorative Envelope signed: "S.D. Griggs", "L. D. Blackshear",
6½x3½. Printed cachet honors "Grumman Gulfstream II/Shuttle Training
Aircraft (STA)", 13-cent stamp affixed, postmarked White Sands Missile Range,
New Mexico, May 5, 1977. Printed below the cachet are the names of shuttle crew
personnel including Griggs and Blackshear. He was aboard Discovery
51-D (April 12-19, 1985). S. DAVID GRIGGS was scheduled to pilot
Discovery STS-33, a dedicated Department of Defense mission scheduled for
launch in August 1989, but was killed in June of that year in the crash of a
vintage WWII airplane. L. DONNA BLACKSHEAR (REYNOLDS), a member of the
test flight crew, later became Manager of Space and Life Science Resources at
the Johnson Space Center. She also directs DREME: the Dr. Ronald E. McNair
Educational Science Literacy Foundation, dedicated to the memory of the
ill-fated Challenger astronaut.Fine condition.
