S. David Griggs and Margaret Rhea Seddon sign a philatelic envelope honoring the Space Shuttle Event at White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico.
Philatelic Envelope signed: "S.D. Griggs" and "Rhea Seddon", 6½x3½. Printed cachet honors "Space Shuttle Event/White Sands Missile Range/New Mexico", bearing 15-cent stamp postmarked White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico, August 20, 1980. S. DAVID GRIGGS (1939-1989) was mission specialist for Discovery STS 51-D, which flew April 12-19, 1985. During the flight, Griggs conducted the first unscheduled space walk of the space program. He was in training as pilot of Discovery STS-33 when he died in the crash of a vintage WWII airplane. MARGARET RHEA SEDDON, M.D. (born in 1947) was selected as a NASA candidate in January 1978 and became an astronaut in August 1979. She made three trips into space aboard space shuttles: as a Mission Specialist on STS-51D Discovery (April 12-19, 1985) and STS-40 Columbia (June 5-14, 1991) and as Payload Commander on STS-58 Columbia (October 18-November 1, 1993). She also assisted in the preparation of the cardio-vascular experiments executed on Columbia (April 1998). After her retirement from NASA in November 1997, Dr. Seddon became Assistant Chief Medical Officer at Vanderbilt Medical Group in Nashville, Tennessee. Fine condition.
