Autograph Letter signed: "Don" as U.S. Senator, 1p, 5¾x3¾. No place, 1979 November 19. On his personal U.S. Senate card to "Dear Pat" [Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan]. In full: "I was looking forward to reading your article on the SALT process. So I am extremely grateful that you sent me a copy. Have you seen Lewis Lapham on SALT in the current Harper's? Thanks again!" "Don" was Hayakawa's nickname, which he only used with close friends. SAMUEL ICHIYE HAYAKAWA (1906-1992) represented California in the U.S. Senate as a Republican from 1977-1983. A college professor and president (San Francisco State, 1968-1973), he wrote influential books on language's influence on thought. Born in Canada of Japanese ancestry, Hayakawa became a U.S. citizen in 1955. He was the founder of U.S. English, an organization whose goal is to make English the official language of the United States. DIRECTLY FROM THE SALE OF THE ESTATE OF DANIEL PATRICK MOYNIHAN. Moynihan (1927-2003) represented New York in the U.S. Senate as a Democrat for four terms (1977-2001). A prolific author, he served in the administrations of four Presidents: Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon and Ford. Slightly soiled. Ink note (unknown hand) at upper right. Stamped number at left margin. Overall, fine condition.
