Index card signed "Sincerely" by detective novelist S. S. Van Dine,
creator of Philo Vance
Autograph Sentiment signed "Sincerely/S. S. Van Dine". Pencil
notations on verso in unknown hand. 5x3 card. S. S. Van Dine was the
pseudonym of Willard Huntington Wright (1888-1939), literary editor for
the Los Angeles Times from 1907 until 1923, when he became bedridden from
illness. To pass the time, he read thousands of detective stories and, in
1926, published his first detective novel of his own: The Benson Murder
Case, which introduced New York dilettante/detective Philo Vance. The
book was a bestseller, and Wright went on to write a total of 12 Philo Vance
novels like The Canary Murder Case (1927), The Bishop Murder Case
(1928), The Kennel Murder Case (1933) and The Winter Murder Case
(1939, published posthumously). His books and characters were translated into
over 25 movies between 1929 and 1947. Lightly toned and creased.
Discolorations from mountings in corners (does not touch signature). Otherwise
in fine condition.
