CIVIL WAR: UNION (S. W. BECKWITH)
War-dated letter to a US Paymaster about a payment owed a soldier's dependent, and offering to help locate deserters
Autograph Letter signed: "S. W. Beckwith", 1 page, 7¾x9¾. South Pass, 1863 December 16. To Major S. B. A. Haynes, US Paymaster, Madison, Wisconsin. In full: "Has Sergeant Daniel S. Bullock, Co. B, 1st Wisconsin Cavalry been discharged and paid at your office within the last year. If so, did you or the Paymaster who was occupying your place retain $24 for Mrs. Mary Beckwith out of his pay? It was put in his final Act, at the time his descriptive Rool [sic] was sent to Madison for him to get his discharge. Please answer as soon as you get this for she is needy and it would do her a great deal of good at present. If it will not too much trouble you, I wish that you would send me a list of the deserters of the 1st Wisconsin Cavalry. I am very sure that there is three or four of the gentlemen about this place, and I can't get a letter from the Regiment in quite a number of days. Yours in haste, Respectfully". This letter merits further research. Daniel S. BULLOCK enlisted as a sergeant in the 1st Wisconsin Cavalryin August 1861, and was discharged in September 1862. During his year of service, the regiment engaged in scouting and foraging duty in Missouri and launched an extended raid into Arkansas, fighting no major battles but engaged in frequent skirmishes, with significant casualties. His relationship to Mary Beckwith is unknown. A Squire W. Beckwith enlisted as a private in the 47th Wisconsin Infantry in February 1865, at age 17, but he cannot be conclusively shown to be the author of this letter. There are towns of South Pass in Wyoming, Louisiana and California, but none in Wisconsin. Multiple mailing folds. Ink smudges on multiple words throughout letter (all legible). Left edge lightly frayed. Otherwise, fine condition.
