Begins: "Madam". In full: "I have only just been
photographed by Messrs: Elliott & Fry, Baker S.' London, not having been
done for some 20 years before; proofs only just come. I remain Yrs
truly". Lew Trenchard was Baring-Gould's family's estate. British
theologian and author Sabine Baring-Gould (1834-1924) is best known for
writing the hymn, "Onward, Christian Soldiers". Baring-Gould, who entered
the ministry at age 30, settled in Devon (at his family's estate, Lew
Trenchard), where he tended to the people in his parish and wrote
hundreds of books, pamphlets and magazine articles to support his large
family and his love of traveling. His works cover a wide range of topics,
including theology, social commentary, history and travel, and his books include
some 30 novels and a 16-volume work on the lives of the Saints. Lightly
creased with folds, not at signature. File hole at upper left blank margin.
