SAGEBRUSH ROUNDUP RADIO CAST
Performers of live shows out of Wheeling, West Virginia, have signed here with their character names.
Autograph Sentiments signed (in character): "Yours for fun/Oscar August Quiddlemurp/Phone 3-8-1-APPLE", "Best wishes/Hank the Cowhand/W W M N", "Best of everything/Flash/Meshinholz", "Your Radio Pal/Tex Redman", 8x10. Signed on verso of a black and white photograph, bearing a printed signature. Wheeling, West Virginia has been second only to Nashville as a home for live country music. From the early days of radio, stations like WWVA and WWMN broadcast homespun music and humor, a tradition that lives on in WWVA's Wheeling Jamboree. Collected here are some cast members from those radio shows, including WWMN's Sagebrush Roundup (1946-1956), a show which featured guest appearances by well-known country performers like Grandpa Jones and Little Jimmy Dickens. Oscar August Quiddlemurp was the radio name of WILLIAM "DUSTY" SHAVER (1925-1982), a comic character who sang country songs with extreme histrionics: laughing his way through humorous songs and sounding extremely mournful on sad ballads. Hank the Cowhand was the radio name of DAVID E. STANFORD (1911-1966), a bass fiddle and rhythm guitarist who also sang. Stanford performed with Eddy Arnold and Ted Fiorita, and performed with Shaver on Sagebrush Roundup. Flash Meshinholz and Tex Redman are probably stage names as well. No further information is available on them. Lightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
