SAL MINEO
Early, insightful letter written by the 16-year-old after just finishing Rebel Without a Cause (1955) that mentions his other films and fellow stars
Autograph Letter signed: "Sal", 2p, 5x8. 2485 Wenner Pl., Bronx 65, New York, 1955 August 2. To Mr. Wines. In full: "Thank you very much for your kind letter, it was a pleasure hearing from you again. Lets see, the last time was while I was in the 'King & I'. Well since then I have completed three movies, two for Universal-International, and one for Warner Bros. I am due to be in California Aug. 12 to do a role in 'Giant' for W.B. Its stars are Rock Hudson and Elizabeth Taylor. 'The Private War of Major Benson', which opens here in N.Y. Aug 2, was my second picture. By the way its about a military school. I think you would enjoy it. My third is with James Dean in 'Rebel Without a Cause.' I was out in California for eighteen weeks. I'm certainly glad to be home. Well I've said an awful lot about my self and I am curious to know what you and the family have been doing. I am very anxious also to meet you. If you are in New York by any chance please look me up. If I'm in Virginia I would certainly like to visit you and Mrs. Wines and your daughter. I was wondering if the Academy is a boy's Academy. I did about thirteen weeks of shooting at a boys military school in California. I had a wonderful time. I would like to visit your school. I'm very glad you enjoyed 'Six Bridges to Cross' I hope you feel the same about the next few pictures. I am sending you a little picture just so you can match it with the other. I am sixteen now. Well have a nice vacation & please send my regards home." At the age of ten, stage and screen actor Sal Mineo (1939-1976) was cast in the 1951 Broadway production of The Rose Tattoo. At age 13, he took over the part of Yul Brynner's son in The King and I, which ran from 1951 to 1954. By the time he was 22, Mineo had been nominated twice for Best Supporting Actor Academy Awards for Rebel Without a Cause (1955) and Exodus (1960). In 1976, the 37-year-old actor was stabbed to death as he was on his way home from a play rehearsal. Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
