CHALLENGER 41-G SPACE SHUTTLE: ROBERT L. CRIPPEN, MARC GARNEAU, JON McBRIDE, SALLY RIDE, KATHRYN D. SULLIVAN and DAVID LEESTMA
Six of the seven crew members of the Challenger 41-G sign an official NASA color publicity photograph.
Photograph signed: "Bob Crippen", "Marc Garneau", "Jon McBride", "Sally K Ride", "Kathryn D Sullivan" and "Dave Leestma". Color, 10x8 overall, image 9¼x7 (one surface). Official NASA photograph. Captioned at upper margin on front: "Crew of the Space Shuttle/Orbital Flight (41-G)". Imprinted caption on verso: "Space Shuttle Orbiter Crew Members for 41-G/The seven members of the Space Shuttle 41-G flight are: (back row, left to right) Payload Specialist Paul D. Scully-Power, Commander Robert L. Crippen, Payload Specialist Marc Garneau; (front row, left to right) Pilot Jon A. McBride, Mission Specialist Sally K. Ride, Mission Specialist Kathryn D. Sullivan, and Mission Specialist David C. Leestma." The primary mission of the Challenger 41-G (October 5-13, 1984), the 13th shuttle flight and the second to land at the Kennedy Space Center, was to deploy the Earth Radiation Budget Satellite as well as make scientific observations and execute outer space refueling maneuvers. The seven-member crew included ROBERT L. "BOB" CRIPPEN, Commander, JON A. McBRIDE, Pilot, SALLY K. RIDE, Mission Specialist, KATHRYN D. SULLIVAN, Mission Specialist, DAVID C. LEESTMA, Mission Specialist, and MARC CARNEAU (the first Canadian in space) and PAUL SCULLY-POWER, Payload Specialists. This was the second mission on which Crippen and Ride participated together, having first flown on the Challenger's second flight, June 18-24, 1983, and the first shuttle flight to include two women on the crew. The mission was Crippen's fourth venture into space; he was also a veteran of the first shuttle mission, having piloted the Columbia on its April 12, 1981 flight. A 1978 NASA astronaut inductee, Ride became the first American woman in space on her 1983 voyage. She would later serve on the Presidential Commission investigating the Challenger tragedy of January 28, 1986. The remaining crew members were making their maiden voyages into space. While executing the 3½-hour Extravehicular Activity (EVA), Leestma and Sullivan conducted the satellite refueling tests, and Sullivan became the first American woman to walk in space. Captain McBride safely piloted the shuttle to and from its destination. Signatures of six of the seven-member crew. Minor surface creases, most not evident head on except at left background, which is scuffed at crease. Slightly soiled at upper margin. Fine condition.
