Philatelic Envelope signed: "Sally K. Ride", 6½x3½. Space Cover bearing Russian and East German stamps picturing Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman in space, Soviet cancellation. U.S. stamp also affixed picturing the Earth, postmarked Kennedy Space Center, June 16, 1988, the 15th anniversary of Tereshkova's milestone flight. Sally K. Ride became the first American woman in space aboard the Challenger Space Shuttle (June 18-24, 1983). Sally Kirsten Ride (1951-2012) was the first American woman in space. She and four male colleagues were aboard the Challenger Space Shuttle from June 18-24, 1983, the first five-person crew. It marked the first use of the Remote Manipulator Structure ("Arm") to deploy and retrieve a satellite. Ride returned to space aboard Challenger, October 5-13, 1984, with five men, including the first Canadian, and another woman. The shuttle deployed the Earth Radiation Budget satellite and used the Sir-B radar system to see beneath the surface of sand. Ride, who resigned from NASA in May 1987, became the Director of the California Space Institute at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and Professor of Physics at the University of California at San Diego in 1989.
