SALLY RIDE
Sally Ride signs a press release about the KSC's shuttle runway.
Press Release signed: "Sally K Ride", 3p, 8½x11, separate sheets. Kennedy Space Center, Florida, 1979 March no day. Release KSC 20-79. Headed: "KSC's Shuttle Runway Among World's Largest". Begins: "The runway at KSC's Shuttle Landing Facility is among the world's most impressive in terms of length and width. The runway is 15,000 feet in length plus a 1,000-foot overrun at each end. Width is 300 feet...." Sally Kirsten Ride (1951-2012) was the first American woman in space. She and four male colleagues were aboard the Challenger Space Shuttle from June 18-24, 1983, the first five-person crew. It marked the first use of the Remote Manipulator Structure ("Arm") to deploy and retrieve a satellite. Ride returned to space aboard Challenger, October 5-13, 1984, with five men, including the first Canadian, and another woman. The shuttle deployed the Earth Radiation Budget satellite and used the Sir-B radar system to see beneath the surface of sand. Ride, who resigned from NASA in May 1987, became the Director of the California Space Institute at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and Professor of Physics at the University of California at San Diego in 1989. Lightly creased. Staple rust stains at upper left corner. Fine condition.
