Philatelic Envelope signed: "Sally K Ride", 6½x3½. Space cover commemorating the first successful landing of the Columbia space shuttle, 8-cent embossed "Bald Eagle" envelope, NASA pictorial postmark Edwards, California, April 14, 1981. Sally Kirsten Ride (1951-2012) was the first American woman in space. She and four male colleagues were aboard the Challenger Space Shuttle from June 18-24, 1983, the first five-person crew. It marked the first use of the Remote Manipulator Structure ("Arm") to deploy and retrieve a satellite. Ride returned to space aboard Challenger, October 5-13, 1984, with five men, including the first Canadian, and another woman. The shuttle deployed the Earth Radiation Budget satellite and used the Sir-B radar system to see beneath the surface of sand. Ride, who resigned from NASA in May 1987, became the Director of the California Space Institute at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and Professor of Physics at the University of California at San Diego in 1989.
