Autograph Letter Signed: "Sally P. McLean". 8x5. Dated February 22, 1884. Seven pages. In
Part: "I rec'd your letter. I asked my father about his own mother (Sally Pratt)". Sally P.
McLean was an American author who came to fame in the late 19th Century. Her debut
publication, Cape Cod Folks (1881), created an uproar among residents of the area who
deemed the book offensive. McLean used actual residents names, which led to numerous libel
lawsuits. They were eventually settles, but actually drove the book's popularity. McLean
wrote numerous other publications, including Towhead, The Moral Imbeciles, and Flood
Tide. Cape Cod Folks was actually turned into a film in 1924 titled Women Who Give.
Toned and creased. Newspaper clipping in top left corner misspells her name. Note in
unknown hand in top right corner. Paper binding worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
