SAM DONAHUE
Sepia-toned publicity photo by James de Kriegsmann of saxophonist and band leader Sam Donahue in a suit and tie, signed "Swingcerely" in blue ink
Inscribed photograph signed "To Frank/All the best/Swingcerely/Sam Donahue/and the gang" in blue ink. B/w sepia-toned, 8x10 overall, 7¼x8¾ image, one surface. Photo by James de Kriegsmann and General Artists Corporation. Captioned: "SAM DONAHUE/And his Orchestra". Donahue (1918-1974, born in Detroit, Michigan) was a well-respected tenor saxophonist who had the bad luck to play in relatively obscure bands. In other words, he never got the fame he deserves. Donahue, who put together his first big band at age 15, played for Gene Krupa, Benny Goodman, Harry James and Tommy Dorsey and led his own bands during World War II (including Artie Shaw's Navy Band) and after (including the Billy May Orchestra). He flirted with fame several times in his career. Count Basie was a guest star when his first band recorded It Counts a Lot, and he gained some late-career recognition with Stan Kenton's Orchestra in the early 1960s. He spent his last years as music director for the Playboy club in New York and leading his own band in Nevada. Lightly toned, cracked, creased and bowed. Light impressions on image (not visible head-on). Light chipping at right edge. Light nicks at left edge. Lightly rounded lower right corner. Otherwise in fine condition.
