SAM JAFFE
A vintage 3½x5½ candid photograph of the eccentric character actor, pictured in a light suit and tie, acquired from the collection of Francis and Violet Zane
Inscribed photograph signed: "To Frances/All the best/Sam Jaffe", in blue ink, B/w 3½x5¾. Sam Jaffe (1891-1984) specialized in portraying eccentric characters. His most prominent roles came early, in such films as Lost Horizon (1937), Gunga Din (in the title role, 1939), The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) and Asphalt Jungle (for which he earned an Oscar nomination in 1950), but he continued in strong supporting roles until shortly before his death from cancer. He played Dr. Zorba on the medical drama Ben Casey (1961-1966), which also featured his wife, Bettye Ackerman. This photograph is from the collection of Francis and Violet Zane, Hawaii natives who moved to California in the 1920's. Francis Zane had a job at the historic Curran Theater and the San Francisco Opera House, which is where he began his massive collection, with photographs and materials ranging from the 1920's to 1960's. The location and luck of his occupation would land him smack dab in the middle of the celebrity world, allowing him to capture some of the most unique and interesting pieces of Hollywood History. Small stain on bottom margin. Corners lightly worn and creased. Fine condition.
