TLS congratulating Joan Crawford for winning the Best Actress Oscar for Mildred Pierce
Typed Letter signed: "Sam", 1 page, 7¼x10½. No place, 1946 March 8. On personal letterhead to Joan Crawford, West Los Angeles, California. In full: "I am sure that winning the Academy Award is the crowning achievement of your career, and I want to tell you that as for me you're well deserving of it and I hope you do many more good pictures like MILDRED PIERCE and win more Oscars! I am sorry about your illness, and hope you will be fully recovered very soon. Sincere best wishes". Sam Jaffe (1901-2000) worked himself up from office boy to executive in charge of productions at Famous Players-Lasky Corporation. He worked at Columbia Pictures for a time before starting his own talent agency. He represented such film luminaries as Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, Peter Lorre, David Niven, Richard Burton, Zero Mostel and Stanley Kubrick. His business damaged when the McCarthy investigations focused on some of his clients, Jaffe , Jaffe moved to London in 1959, returning to film productions. Among his best known productions were The Fighting Sullivans (1944) and Born Free (1966). He should not be confused with actor Sam Jaffe, who died in 1984. Jaffe's reference in this letter to Joan Crawford's illness-induced absence from the 1946 Academy Award ceremony, where she won the Oscar for Best Actress, is interesting. Crawford was in bed with pneumonia, and the Oscar was delivered to her bedside later that night. Hollywood gossips speculated that Crawford had feigned illness because she was uncertain of winning the award. Normal mailing creases. Otherwise fine condition.
