SAM STEIGER
The Congressman signs a typed fundraising letter during his run for US Senate.
Typed Letter signed: "Sam Steiger", 1 page, 8x11. Prescott, Arizona, 1976 October 20. To Danny Franklin, Phoenix, Arizona. In full: "I'm writing to ask you to serve on my Senatorial Advisory Board, along with other leading Republicans in Arizona. As a Congressman from the 3rd District for ten years and a candidate for the U.S. Senate this year, I feel it is vital for elected officials to stay in touch with the people they elect. And in order for me to do the best possible job for the people of our state, I'll need your advice. That's why I want you to serve on my Advisory Board. The job doesn't have to be any more time-consuming than you want to make it. But I will value your opinions on many matters affecting Arizona and the nation. In addition, I'll be meeting with Mary Parkison, my campaign treasurer, in the next few days to decide on our final newspaper ads which should list many of my Advisory Board members. I would like to include your name among these. I've enclosed a postage-paid envelope for you to send me your decision about serving on my Advisory Board. Please let me have your answer today. Also, if you would like to do volunteer work or make a contribution to help pay for these ads, please check the appropriate box on the enclosed form. Thank you. Sincerely." [signature] P. S. I thought you might like to see one of my brochures. Please pass it along to a friend once you've finished reading it." Sam Steiger earned a Silver Star and Purple Heart as a tank platoon leader in the Korean War. A rancher before entering politics, Steiger served in the Arizona Senate (1960-1964) and U.S. Congress (1967-1977). The Republican nominee for the U.S. Senate in 1976, he lost to Democrat Dennis DeConcini. He later served as special assistant to Arizona Governor Evan Meacham (1987-1988). Lightly creased at top edge. Otherwise, fine condition.
