Actor and director Sam Wanamaker (1919-1993) was nominated for an Emmy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in the 1978 TV miniseries, Holocaust. Wanamaker, who made his film debut in 1948, went on to appear in a number of films, including Taras Bulba (1962), The Spy Who Came in from the Cold (1965), The Spiral Staircase (1975), Death on the Nile (1978), Private Benjamin (1980) and Superman VI: The Quest for Peace (1980). He also was in a number of made-for-TV movies, and in guest appearances. He also directed several made-for-TV movies, episodes of TV series and feature films. Finally, Wanamaker is known for his work in the theater. In 1957, five years after he made his London stage debut, Wanamaker became Director of the New Shakespeare Theatre in Liverpool, and he was instrumental in the rebuilding of the Globe Theatre in London.
