SAMMY KAYE
Sammy Kaye sends a typed letter of regret that he cannot send an 8x10
photograph as requested.
Typed Letter Signed: "Sammy Kaye", 1p, 8½x11. New York,
1940 November 28. On letterhead of Exclusive Management Music Corporation of
America (featuring a "Swing and Sway" logo) to Mr. Harry Blair, Jr., La Crosse,
Wisconsin. In full: "Many thanks for your recent letter acknowledging
receipt of my photo mailed to you previously. I am sorry I cannot comply with
your request for an 8x10 picture inasmuch as I do not have a photo this size for
mailing to my radio listeners. I would like very much to send one to you but
cannot at this time. Thanks again for writing and I hope you will continue to
tune in to our broadcasts from the Hotel Commodore and enjoy them." Sammy
Kaye (1910-1987), was the leader of one of the most popular "sweet" bands of the
big band era. A popular performer on radio and in venues from New York
(the Commodore Hotel's Century Room, The Roosevelt Grill, etc.) to the
Hollywood Palladium to cities across America, Kaye received his "million
dollar tagline", "Swing and Sway With Sammy Kaye", from an announcer at the
Cabin Club in Cleveland, Ohio. Kaye was as well known for his
audience-participation novelty, "So You Want to Lead a Band?", as he was for
his hits, which included his theme song, "Kaye's Melody", and "It Isn't Fair",
"Daddy", "Room Full of Roses", "Charade" and "Harbor Lights". In addition to
being a prolific recording artist for RCA Victor, Columbia and American
Decca, Kaye and his band appeared in the films Iceland (1942) and
Song of the Open Road (1944), and Kaye wrote songs for 1987's Radio
Days. In 1986, he turned over his baton to Roger Thorpe, who continues to
lead The Sammy Kaye Orchestra today. Lightly creased. Soiled at upper margin.
