SAMUEL J. RANDALL
The Congressman's handwritten letter, dated 1878, discussing a picture of his old family Church.
Autograph letter signed: "Sam J. Randall", 1 page, 7½x9¾ ruled sheet. Washington, D.C., March 27, 1878. To "My dear Sir", John A. Mc'Allister, New York. In full: "Your kind letter received this morning. Mrs. Roberts lives with me and a photograph of the old family church would be most acceptable to her and would gratify me very much as I want to Sunday school in that building. You will find living in N.Y. more lively than in Phila. But I very much prefer the latter. Yours truly," SAMUEL J. RANDALL represented Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1863 until his death in 1890, serving as Speaker of the House from 1876-1881. He also served on the Pennsylvania State Senate (1858-1860). A Whig and later Democrat, he was considered for the Democratic presidential candidacy in 1880 and 1884. Toned around edges. Pencil note (unknown hand) at top margin. Slightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
