In full: I sent you today a copy of the 'Directory of the 3rd Session - 42nd Congress - from which you can gather the confirmation you ask for in your letter to me of May 5. Very Respectfully Yours." Samuel J. Randall (1828-1890), a Civil War veteran promoted at Gettysburg, represented Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1863 until his death. He was Speaker of the House (1876-1881). Randall sought the Democratic presidential nomination in 1876 and 1880. Lightly creased. Nail head sized stain at blank top margin. Mounting paper remnants on blank conjoined page show through slightly at upper left. Overall, fine condition.
