SAMUEL L. CLEMENS (MARK TWAIN). ALS: "S L Clemens", 1p, 4¼x5¼ black-bordered stationery. [Vienna], 1899 February 17. To Miss Annette. In full: "It was a very great pleasure you gave me in putting that book into my hands; it has ended up a good many days comfortably & interestingly for me after my drudge of work. I thank you lots & lots. We are all going about an hour hence, to hear Mark Hambourg play; come along - you shall have a front seat! With the warmest regards Your friend". American author SAMUEL L. CLEMENS had first met Russian pianist MARK HAMBOURG (1879-1961) in Melbourne, Australia in 1895, a year after Hambourg had made his debut in Vienna at age 15. Hambourg later recalled the years the American writer lived in Vienna: "Mark Twain used to keep open house in Vienna and musicians used to drop in for a meal. They were enormous meals, for artists are always hungry people. One day when I arrived, I heard an extraordinary noise, like a dog howling. I wondered if the animal was in pain and discovered it was Mark Twain singing one of the old Mississippi river songs." Lightly creased with mid-horizontal fold. Slightly soiled. Tape repair at fold on verso, which is lightly soiled and has tape remnants at upper edge. Lightly worn at edges of black border. Overall, fine condition.
