TO HIS REAL ESTATE AGENT: "RID ME OF THE HARTFORD HOUSE."

SAMUEL L. CLEMENS (MARK TWAIN).
ALS: "S L Clemens", 1p, 5½x7¾. (Riverdale, New York City), 1903 April 11. To Franklin G. Whitmore. In full: "Is the man still in the market who offered you $20,000 & a house on Gillette street? If so, take him up -- & then sell the Gillette street house straight off for the best price you can get. Rid me of the Hartford house. If any man wants to pay $25,000 cash for it, let him have it." In 1887, MARK TWAIN had hired FRANKLIN G. WHITMORE (1846-1926), a Hartford, Connecticut real estate and insurance agent, to take care of all his financial dealings, even magazine subscriptions. In 1870, Samuel and Olivia Clemens were married and moved to Hartford, where they rented a house. In 1873, they moved into their newly built home in Hartford. Mark Twain later wrote that this house "had a heart, and a soul, and eyes to see us with; and approvals and solicitudes and deep sympathies; it was of us, and we were in its confidence and lived in its grace and in the peace of it benediction." Financial problems forced the family to Europe in 1891. After their daughter Susy's death in 1896, it was difficult for Olivia to return to their Hartford home. When they returned to New York in 1901, they lived in a house in Riverdale, The Bronx, at the northern border of New York City. In 1903, Whitmore followed Clemens' orders and sold the Hartford House. Lightly creased with folds, horizontal fold at paraph of signature. Two ¼-inch tears at blank right margin and ¼-inch tear at blank left margin at horizontal folds have been repaired with tape on verso (light show th rough at the "s" of Clemens and 3 words). ¼-inch tear above lower horizontal fold touches 1 letter. Slightly soiled at lower blank margin. Overall, fine condition.
