SAMUEL L. CLEMENS (MARK TWAIN). ALS: "S L. Clemens", 1p, 4½x5¾. Riverdale, N.Y. City, no year, but 1902 or 1903, May 13. To Mr. Wolfe. In full: "After endorsing your check over to the Harpers I found I did not need to buy a book - I found one on hand, & am forwarding it." Samuel L. Clemens had moved to Riverdale in The Bronx in October 1901. After his wife, Olivia, became ill, the Clemens family sailed for a warmer climate in Florence, Italy, arriving there in November 1903, so this letter must have been written in the spring of 1902 or 1903. Mr. Wolfe had evidently sent a check to Clemens for a book that Clemens had planned to buy for him from Harpers. Harper & Bros. was the only U.S. company authorized to publish copyrighted Mark Twain books. Lightly creased, not at signature. Slightly soiled. Blank integral leaf shaded. Fine condition.
