1¢ handwritten and signed by Clemens giving someone permission to use parts of his 1879 "Babies" speech
Autograph note signed "S L Clemens" in pencil. 1 page, 5x3, on 1¢ postcard. Hartford, Connecticut, Feb. 25, 1884. Addressed on verso to J. H. Gilbert, 144 Elm St. Albany, New York. In full: "Yes, you can use extract from Babies speech, not to exceed 600 words. You letter got mislaid, or it would have been answered sooner. Yr Truly". Clemens gave his "Babies" speech at Chicago's Palmer House in 1879 at the 13 th reunion of the Army of the Tennessee, which included former president and Civil War general Ulysses S. Grant among its guests of honor. Clemens (1835-1910), who wrote under the pen name Mark Twain, was a steamboat pilot, journalist, world traveler and renowned lecturer. Above all, he was a skillful essayist and novelist whose lasting contributions to American literature include Tom Sawyer (1875), Huckleberry Finn (1885) and A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court. Lightly toned. Rounded edges. Otherwise in fine condition.
