Book signed: "Mark Twain", 18 pages, 7½x10½. The American Portrait Gallery, with Biographical Sketches (Part 21), by J. C. Buttre. N.Y:, J. C. Buttre, Publisher, undated. Includes four steel engravings: one each of Abraham Lincoln, Esek Hopkins, William Adams and Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet. Clemens (1835-1910), who wrote under the pen name Mark Twain, was a steamboat pilot, journalist, world traveler and renowned lecturer. Above all, he was a skillful essayist and novelist whose lasting contributions to American literature include Tom Sawyer (1875), Huckleberry Finn (1885) and A Connecticut Yankee At King Arthur's Court (1889). John C. Buttre's American Portrait Gallery was issued serially in 40 parts. When Buttre finished the project in1877, many of these serials were bound into complete sets. A scarce edition in this form. Stained and tattered at edges. Binding separated. Clear dust cover undamaged. Signature clear and clean.
