City, no year, January 3. On letterhead of The Players to unknown
recipient at the Clover Club. In full: "Mr. S.L. Clemens desires to
thank the Clover Club for the compliment of their invitation, & at
the same time express his regret that existing engagements debar him from
accepting." The Players Club, located in a Greek Revival townhouse at
16 Gramercy Park in Manhattan, was founded in 1888 by actor Edwin Booth.
Clemens was one of the charter members and lived there when visiting New York
City. The Clover Club was established by prominent men in the business
community, along with city officials and journalists, in Philadelphia in
1882. It is still in existence. Samuel Langhorne Clemens (1835-1910), who
wrote under the pen name Mark Twain, was a steamboat pilot, journalist,
world traveler and renowned lecturer. Above all, he was a skillful essayist
and novelist whose lasting contributions to American literature include
Tom Sawyer (1875), Huckleberry Finn (1885) and A Connecticut
Yankee in King Arthur's Court. Slightly creased with folds, not at
signature. Mounting remnants at corners of verso of integral leaf (no show
through). Fine condition.
